If you’re reading this, hopefully we are either on our way or have already arrived at Assateague Island.
I’ve been going there at least once a year for the last 3 or 4 years, and I just LOVE it!
Assateague is a remote island just 8 miles from Ocean City, MD, but because it’s a protected national park, it’s MUCH quieter and peaceful. There are no hotels there, so we’re camping on the beach — yep, right on the sand! And the best part? Wild ponies! They ate a banana I left out one year and I wasn’t too happy…
Because the beach is so great, and the camping prices are a steal (when you compare it to what a hotel room would cost), the campsites sell out by the end of February, so I always have to plan this trip early in the year.
There’s a very small group of us going this year, and I don’t know yet if another friend of ours are going to come by and share our campsite on Saturday, as they’ll be making a day-of decision.
I’m schedule to run 8 miles on Saturday (have I mentioned that Chicago Marathon training started this week? No? Probably because I haven’t run at all yet!), and now I have to figure out if I can suck it up and run 8 miles on the hot unshaded road on my own.
If not, no worries, I’ll be too busy enjoying this to feel guilty (all pictures below taken on my trip there in ’08):
This was the freakiest picture I took there — I was lying on the sand, minding my own business, and I looked up and all four horses were lined up a few feet away staring at me!
