Today as I was walking towards the bus stop, while I was still 2 blocks away from it, I heard a loud explosion, the ground shook. My heart raced fast and brought me right back to 9/11. I didn’t even know I had those emotions in me, but they quickly came right to the surface.
Of course, my first instinct was to look back, as I was less than a mile from the Pentagon, but I saw no smoke, and no one seemed too startled by it. So off I went to the stop.
Everyone at the stop was normal too, and you know how it is in these big cities, no one talks to each other. So I started to wonder if I just imagined it all, but I KNOW how an explosion feels like. Unfortunately, I know.
Then, I heard the sirens approaching and texted Karl (who I had texted right after the explosion) that the firetrucks were there, I wasn’t imagining it after all.
Much to my surprise, they turned into the street I was in, and stopped half a block away. Turns out, a car exploded just half a block from my bus stop — and once the firetrucks got there, everyone started talking about how they too heard the explosion, and some people even witnessed it happen while parts of the car flew into the street (the back of the car was completely destroyed). There was no smoke, however, and I didn’t even know the whole thing happened so close to the stop until then. Once we hopped on the bus, you could clearly see the car and how little there was left of it (the picture does not do it justice).
I got to work, and checked out the Arlington blog I read, and it was there (you can check it out here):
BREAKING NEWS – A car explodes in Penrose
A white BMW exploded around 8:15 a.m. this morning in the Penrose neighborhood.
The explosion happened near the intersection of South Courthouse Road and 9th Street South. No one was hurt, according to fire department spokesperson Lt. Ed Hughes.
Police have cordoned off the area. Bomb dogs are searching the area for explosives.
If you look closely, you can see how the car is missing the whole back.
How is that as a start to the morning? And yes, I’m freaked out… Because parked cars do not just explode.
