Music to get me running!

When I posted about missing my running partners and lacking motivation to run on my own, the consensus was:  GET BETTER MUSIC!

Yep, I don’t usually run with music, but as I’m stuck running on my own, I’m putting my walkman to good use. But, of course, if you have been paying attention, it’s lacking on the playlist department.  I have a bunch of random things in there, but most don’t get me running.  Apparently, as much as I love the 90’s the songs don’t motivate me to put one foot in front of the other… (Even the Guns n Roses songs – which I will sing aloud in the car completely embarrassing myself every.single.time – don’t get me moving.  What is this world coming to?!)

Turns out, when running, I like crappy pop music.  Of the “oh, my god, is that really playing three times an hour on the radio?” variety.

So I need your help!

Suggestions will be GREAT, specially since I haven’t been listening to the radio lately (no car in Manila yet!), so I’m out of ideas.

Here’s a sample of the songs that do get me moving, that I currently have on my playlist (and it might be of help for those of you also looking for ideas):

-Bruno Mars – Grenade, Just the Way You Are
-Cee Lo Green – F**k you
-Chris Brown – Yeah 3x
-Coldplay – Viva La Vida
-Enrique Iglesias – Tonight, I Like It
-Estelle – American Boy
-Flo Rida – Club Can’t Handle Me
-Jessie J – Price Tag
-Katy Perry – California Gurls, Firework
-Ke$ha – We Are Who We Are, Tik Tok, Blow
-Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire, Use Somebody
-Little Jackie – The Stoop
-Muse – Uprising
-Panic! At the Disco – The Ballad of Mona Lisa
-Paul Oakenfold – Faster Kill Pussycat
-Pink – Raise Your Glass
-Taio Cruz – Dynamite, Higher
-The Killers – Spaceman, Human
-Usher – DJ Got Us Falling in Love

And here is  list of completely RANDOM songs that in the past just clicked while I was running outside and made me keep putting it on repeat for the rest of the run (don’t judge!):

-Breaking Benjamin – Diary of Jane
-Buckcherry – Crazy Bitch
-Carolina Liar – Show me What I’m Looking For
-Finger Eleven – Paralyzer (of course this was before it got overplayed in the radio)
-Lacuna Coil – Enjoy the Silence
-Miley Cyrus – Party in the USA
-My Chemical Romance – Teenagers
-One Republic – Stop and Stare
-Pearl Jam – Light Years
-Seether – Rise Above This
-Soul Asylum – Runaway Train
-The All-American Rejects – Gives You Hell

(Told you it was totally random, but I guess it gives a better idea of the type of music I like?  Plus, for some of them, you can totally tell it would only work on an outdoor run…)

Now what would YOU suggest as an addition to my playlist?  (The more the better!)

And before I forget:  THANK YOU!

Also, do you like Lady Gaga? I like a lot of her songs for running.

    • I normally don’t like Lady Gaga, but for running, it is AWESOME. So I’m saying ditto to Kilax. Do you like Taylor Swift? Some of her stuff is fun to run to. ….I’m currently smack in my Bon Jovi phase, even though that’s 90’s, I think Bon Jovi is in a class of their own. 🙂

  5. Katie

You definitely need to get some Pitbull (Hey Baby) and 3OH!3 (Starstrukk/Don’t Trust Me) on your playlist! Jimmy Eat World can also be motivational (some of their higher-BPM stuff like Bleed American and A Praise Chorus).

  6. We seem to have the same taste for our running music and I would recommend a lot of what Kim and Claire said above. I will try to remember to look at my iPod when I get home but a few that I can think of (that haven’t already been mentioned) are:

All I Do is Win–DJ Khaled
    Animal–Neon Trees
    Black and Yellow–Wiz Khalifa
    All the Above–Maino
Bright Lights Bigger City–Cee Lo Green
Don’t Stop Believin’–Glee Cast (side note: I have never seen a single episode of Glee but they have some great arrangements!)
    Get on the Floor–J Lo
    Til the World Ends–Britney Spears
    S&M–Rhianna
    Untouched–The Veronicas

  7. Jen

    Hey Carla,
Instead of suggestions of songs, because so much good stuff has been posted, my husband has a site where you could download some voice prompt playlists. We put together our own music from itunes, merged the endings and beginnings so there’s no dead space, and then added voice prompts for C25K so you don’t have to look at your watch. You could use the C25K ones for interval training, and then we’ve posted a few 1 hr lengths to go beyond. http://www.c25kplaylists.com He’s got all the songs/artists on rollover, so you can see whether you’d like it before you download.

  8. Kele – Unholy Thoughts
    Kele – Tenderoni
    Beck – Timebomb
Glee Cast – Friday (total guilty pleasure)
New Boyz – Backseat (Feat. The Cataracts & Dev)
Ida Corr & Fedde Le Grand – Let Me Think About It
Basement Jaxx – Where’s Your Head At
The Killers – Mr. Brightside (Thin White Duke Remix)
Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup – No Speak Americano
Robyn – Dancing on My Own
Insane-o-Flex – I Like Your Booty (But I’m Not Gay)

I agree with a lot of the suggestions above, too. I’ve mostly suggested stuff with driving beats and a little more bass – along those lines, I find most of Rob Zombie’s stuff to be good for intense cardio, along with Benny Benassi, and Fatboy Slim (Going Out of My Head, Renegade Master, Rockefeller Skank).

I also have some “angry cardio” playlists for when I’m really frustrated about something and need to run it out, so to speak – Korn, Powerman 5000, Disturbed, Methods of Mayhem, Prodigy, etc. Good luck!

    • Jen

OH I made myself a playlist titled “Angry”! Ha! It’s a lot of Linkin Park because I really don’t know that genre very well. So thanks, Jessica, I’ll search for some of your suggestions to mix my angry list up a bit.

  9. I think I am so different. I run with love songs or bossa nova playing on my mp3 player.

Btw, if I want it to be jumpy , I go for Drop It Low by Ester Dean feat. Chris Brown, Rude Boy by Rihanna and my favorite song during indoor spin class at the gym, Don’t Hold Your Breath by Nicole Scherzinger.

Good Vibes and Sweet Running! ^_^

  10. Well I am going through all these songs, cause most people didn’t post their playlists on my request (I guess cause I had a lot of other stuff in the post,… oh well)…

jog.fm is cool for finding songs with the right beats per minute.

    I added the following today:
Harder to Breathe – Maroon 5
    Lose Yourself – Eminem
    Raise Your Glass – Pink
What the Hell – Avril Lavigne (this played while I was on the tread today and worked really well)
Dog Days are Over – Florence and the Machine
    Perfect – Pink
    Im Yours – jason Mraz
    Fighter – Xtina
    I Gotta Feeling – Black-eyed Peas
Mean – Taylor Swift (because my Paige LOVES this song)
